Au revoir!

Our adventures truly began today.  We all woke up fairly early.  The excitement and anticipation wouldn’t let us sleep.   After the usual hectic packing of last minute items, we piled into the rental van.

When we pulled out, it was sprinkling nicely.   By the time we reached Kingsburg, it was quite a downpour.   This didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits though.  Everyone was jovial and talking about what they most look forward to seeing or doing.  Of course, the fun was interrupted by the first potty break of the trip....in Tulare!   For anyone who knows about our road trips, this was a major improvement over the usual stop in Traver.   ;-)

By the time we reached the Grapevine, the rain had slowed to sprinkles again and everyone was quiet and in the “travel zone.”    In our family, this means headphones on and give different genres of music playing at once. Jim and I were enjoying the quiet, but it was almost too calm.  We had to stop for coffee to help us rejuvenate.   After a quick stop at a coffeehouse in Castaic (the coffee was unremarkable so no Yelp recommendations will be forthcoming), we again hit the road.

Everyone was alert and chatting again after that stop.  We enjoyed singing (on- and off-key) to some oldies.  Eventually, we found ourselves driving through Culver City.  We ate lunch at the Chick-fil-a there.  DJ said that he hoped that was his “last American-style meal for 10 days!”

From there, it was a quick drive to the airport.  Jim and Andrew dropped the rest of us, and the luggage, off at the terminal and then returned the rental van.  After a check-in snafu at the Delta kiosk, we took a nice 5 minute hike to the Air France terminal (Delta’s air partner).  Check in there was smooth and uneventful, except that Andrew had to wait for over an hour to check in for his flight (he’s on a separate flight — long story, but he’s going to Paris).  DJ, the girls and I went through security while Jim readied Andrew for his check-in.   One of our party learned the hard way that a Gatorade counts as liquid, so we were all  held up waiting for that bag to be searched so Jim had plenty of time to catch up with the rest of us!!
